History of San Diego

History of San Diego

History of San Diego County, California

The area's original inhabitants were the Kumeyaay, Payomkawichum, Acjachemen, and Kuupangaxwichem Indians. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European to visit the region. Although his visit did not lead to settlement, his landing is always enacted yearly at the Cabrillo Festival. The festival is sponsored by Cabrillo National Monument. The present San Diego and the bay area were named by Sebastian Vizcaino when mapping the Alta California coastline for Spain. After the establishment of San Diego Presidio and the Mission San Diego, the Europeans began settling in what is now San Diego. Before, the area was part of Alta California until the period of the Mexican declaration of independence, when it became part of Mexico. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American war, leading to San Diego becoming part of the United States. The county was officially created as one of the central regions of California during the time of California statehood. During its formation, the county was quite large as it comprised all of the southern part of CA and the south and east of Los Angeles County. In later years, changes took place in the boundaries of San Diego county. Different parts were detached to form the Riverside and Imperial Counties. As a result, San Diego no longer entailed the entire border of California and Mexico.
