There were many conflicts, land disputes, and other natural disasters associated with the settlement of Fresno County. It was also ravaged by floods and fires, razing an entire city block in 1882.

As a result of the hard times faced by those in Fresno, the city has grown more innovative. Moses Church developed the first irrigation canals, referred to as "Church Ditches," enabling extensive wheat farming. When winemaker Francis Eisen accidentally dried out some grapes on his vine in 1875, he also started the raisin industry in Fresno County.

Later, A.Y. Easterby and Clovis Cole, aka the "Wheat King of the Nation," developed extensive grain and cattle ranches. Through their collective efforts, Fresno County has grown into one of the nation's leading agricultural regions.

In the late 1900s,oil was discovered in the western part of the county, bringing about an economic boom, even though the field itself was known at least as early as the 1860s. Back then, it was the largest oil discovery in California; the gusher alone was large enough to cause the Los Angeles Stock Exchange to close for a day so that its members could come by train to see it.
