It is believed that in 1810, Spanish Franciscan missionary Francisco Dumatz journeyed across the valley from the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel. When he came into the valley, it was the feast day of Saint Bernadine of Siena. Because of this, Dumatz gave the valley area the name San Bernardino. This later became the name for the county and the city which is the county seat.
