A History of Sacramento County

The part of California that would become Sacramento County has been occupied by various native American groups for at least 19,000 years, and possibly longer. A few of the peoples who lived in the area include the Maidu and Nisenan.

The movement of European peoples into the region after contact was slow, until the discovery of gold in 1848. After that, Europeans came in droves, mostly from other parts of Mexico and the United States which had been settled long before.

By 1850, California was formally made a US State, and Sacramento County was one of the original divisions. It would be some time before there were any condos in Sacramento County, but population built steadily until the region held more than 1.5 million people in 2020.
