Formerly a Spanish colony, Contra Costa was later granted to Mexico. California became a state in 1850, and Contra Costa County was one of the first of 27 counties within it. A portion of this county was formed into Alameda County in 1853.

After the loading docks exploded in 1944, the Federal Government bought out and demolished Port Chicago to create a safety zone near the Naval Weapons Station.
