The territory of San Diego was first inhabited by the Kumeyaay people in 1000 CE. In 1542, Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo claimed the area for the Spanish Empire and named it San Miguel. The Spanish Empire sent Sebastian Vizcaino to map out the California coast. On arrival, his first stop was San Diego. He surveyed the harbor and what are now Point Loma and Mission Bay and named the area for Catholic Saint Didacus(popularly known as San Diego de Alcala). Permanent colonization of California began in 1769, with the arrival of four contingents of Spaniards from the Baja California peninsula and New Spain. Portola founded the Fort Presidio of San Diego on a mountain near the San Diego River. Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821 and took over San Diego territory as part of Alta California. Americans learned about California's commercial possibilities from the writings of two Americans about the city. This encouraged the United States to go to war against Mexico in 1846. The state of California, which included San Diego, was awarded to the United States in 1850 due to the treaty of Cahuenga.

San Diego is home to an array of beaches, some of which are among the best in the world. The city has a beach that caters to everything that can be done at the beach. Buying a house in San Diego means you are just a reasonable distance away from a beach. Going to the beach on weekends is like a culture in San Diego. Interested in surfing? Oceanside beach has the best provisions for surfers, and you can also socialize with other surfers. Its oceanside harbor also has a safe space area where children can have fun and get wet. Oceanside is also known for having one of the first official dog beaches in the country. Want to go hiking and also get wet? Torrey Pines Beach is the place to be. You can either enjoy the white sand and water on the beach or take a hike among the numerous pine trees.
