In 1602, Sebastian Vizcaino reached the area. This Spanish explorer decided to rename the bay San Diego despite having some objections. Ultimately, due to the growing competition from France, Russia, and England, Spain wanted to strengthen their claim in Alta California. In 1769, Gaspar Portola established a fortress above the Old Town. In July 1769, the Mission San Diego de Alcala was founded by Friar Junipero Serra. It also signifies the official recognition of the City of San Diego.

San Diego is the ninth-most educated city in the country, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is the largest university in the city. Other public colleges and universities in San Diego are the San Diego Community College District, which comprises San Diego Mesa College, San Diego City College, and San Diego Miramar College.
