The first settlers of San Diego were the Kumeyaay tribe. They have lived and gained control in the area for several years. Later on, there were modern developments in the area including National City, Old Town San Diego, and Chula Vista. Their village life and culture can be seen in numerous museums today. In September 1542, Spanish explorers arrived in San Diego Bay. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, their commander, named the area San Miguel Bay in honor of the saint’s feast day. In 1602, Sebastian Vizcaino reached the area. This Spanish explorer decided to rename the bay San Diego despite having some objections. Ultimately, due to the growing competition from France, Russia, and England, Spain wanted to strengthen their claim in Alta California. In 1769, Gaspar Portola established a fortress above the Old Town. In July 1769, the Mission San Diego de Alcala was founded by Friar Junipero Serra. It also signifies the official recognition of the City of San Diego.
