History of Sacramento

History of Sacramento

Sacramento Canyon

Sacramento has quite a story. Its history dates back to the pre-Columbian period when the area was occupied by Nisenan, Modoc, and Plains Miwok Native American tribes. Gabriel Moraga, a Spanish explorer, came to the area in 1808 and gave it the name Sacramento Valley and the Sacramento River. The name “Sacramento” as you would guess, is Spanish for “Sacrament.” John Sutter Sr arrived in the Sacramento Valley with a Mexican land grant of 50,000 acres. He built Sutter’s fort and renamed the area “New Helvetia.” In 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, attracting many gold miners and prospectors. John Sutter Jr began to build the city of Sacramento, 2 miles from his father’s home in New Helvetia. On February 27, 1850, Sacramento was incorporated as a city in California. With the support of Governor John Bigler, the California State Legislature moved to Sacramento in 1854. Despite recurrent flooding in the city, Sacramento continued to grow, and more people moved to the city. In the 1870s, the city built reinforced brick walls on its downtown streets to prevent flooding. Voters adopted the city’s current charter in 1920. Sacramento is exempt from numerous laws and regulations passed by the state legislature since it is a charter city. In 1964, Sacramento merged with the City of North Sacramento, increasing its population. One interesting fact about its leadership is that Ronald Regan was the last Governor of California to live in Sacramento permanently.
