The Native American tribes were the first to occupy the area that is present-day Long Beach until Spanish Explorers arrived in the area in the 16th century. In 1784, King Carlos III, of the Spanish Empire, granted Rancho Los Nietos, which shared a border with Rancho Los Cerritos, to Manuel Nieto, a Spanish soldier. In 1843, Juan Temple purchased Ranchos Los Cerritos and built the Los Cerritos Ranch House, which is still standing today and is classified as a National Historic Landmark. The temple and the ranch played an important role to locals during the Mexican-American War. After the U.S Conquest of California, the Public Land Commission gave the deed of Rancho Los Cerritos to Temple, who later sold it in 1866. The City of Long Beach was incorporated in 1897. Long Beach became a seaside resort, but some residents practiced agriculture to earn a living. Oil was discovered in 1921 on Signal Hill, which later split off from Long Beach, becoming an incorporated city. The Long Beach Oil Field discovery significantly improved the town’s economy, and the Alamitos oil well #1 made Long Beach have the most productive oil field in the world. The city was part of the Battle of Los Angeles during World War II. Douglas Aircraft Company was the largest facility in the city; it later merged with Boeing in 1997 to manufacture transport planes before closing in 2015.
