History of Collin County Texas

History of Collin County Texas

Harris County History

Collin County was founded in 1847 following Texas’s independence from Mexico. Before then, Buckner was the county seat but since it was more than three miles from the Collin County’s center, the county seat was moved to McKinney.

Long before the settlers arrived in Collin County, the Caddo Indians inhabited the area. They farmed maize and lived in beehive-like homes that formed small scattered villages. After the Indians left Collin in the 1850s, more settlers, attracted by the fertile soils and Peters colony grants, arrived and settled along the rivers where they grew corn and wheat.

Collin County got its name from Collin McKinney. McKinney was among the first settlers in Collin County and he played a huge role in the fight for Texas’s independence. McKinney was a politician, land surveyor, church founder, and merchant.

He was part of the team that drafted the Texas Declaration of Independence in January of 1836. On March 2, the same year, McKinney signed the document and would later serve in the committee that prepared the rules for the Republic of Texas. In his honor, after Texas gained its independence, Collin county was named after him and so was the county’s seat, McKinney.
