History of San Antonio

History of San Antonio

Mission San Jose San Antonio Texas

Europeans began entering South and Central Texas as early as the 1500s. However, a permanent settlement wasn't recorded until the 1700s. San Antonio was founded in 1718 when a Spanish expedition established the Mission San de Valero. A presidio (military garrison) named San Antonio Bexar was also established nearby. Juan Leal Goraz Jr. was an eminent figure during the Spanish-Mexican settlement of the Southwestern lands in the 18th century. He helped the Spanish claim almost 100,000 sq miles and maintained control over the territory for nearly three decades. He helped expand the area by leading military forces and establishing Spanish colonial bases as far as San Francisco. The U.S. decided to annex Texas and make it a state in the Union in 1845. This decision led to the Mexican-American War, which the United States won. However, the war had a devastating impact on San Antonio as the city's population was reduced by almost two-thirds (800 inhabitants). However, the American Civil War ushered in a new development period for the city. By 1860, the city's population had grown to 15,000. The region also welcomed the arrival of Germans who founded small towns such as Bulverde, Castroville, Comfort, Boerne, and New Braunfels. While these towns weren't in San Antonio, most immigrants were drawn to the city for work and other dealings.
