History

Long before the Europeans came, and even longer before anyone thought about buying a mobile home in Austin, the area was a riverside village under the name of Waterloo. The land consisted of a buffalo-hunting region that was occupied by the Tonkawa and Comanche people. In 1839, the site was selected by scouts to serve as the capital for the Republic of Texas and it was established as the City of Austin. It was renamed to honor Stephen F. Austin who was otherwise known as “The Father of Texas.” A year later, Austin was incorporated and had nearly 1000 residents. The city was a successful trading center for ranchers and farmers after the Houston and Texas Central Railroad was established and a permanent bridge was built over the Colorado River in 1871. In 1900, a flood caused dramatic destruction and the bridge collapsed. In the early 20th century, flood control was organized, the river was harnessed for power and Austin’s industry began to develop. During the 1990s, widespread growth took place in the city due to high technology industries. The city adopted the name “Silicon Hills” following this influx of technology and development companies, and the city we know today was created.
