Where Can I Buy a Condo in Corpus Christi, TX?

Corpus Christi has a population of around 277,000 people, according to the 2020 census, and is the county seat of Nueces County. The coastal city is the eighth largest in the state of Texas, the second largest in the South Texas region and the largest in Nueces County. The coastal city boundaries also extend into the surrounding counties of Aransas, Kleberg and San Patricio.

The name of the city was given by a Spanish explorer in the 16th century when he discovered the semi-tropical bay on the Christian feast day of Corpus Christi. This festival of the Roman Catholic Church honors the presence of the body of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament (Eucharist) or Lord’s Supper. Translated from Latin, Corpus Christi is the “Body of Christ.” These days, locals and natives refer affectionately to the city as “Christi.”

The city flag is a design created by a student in the 1950s and shows a simple but symbolic two-color banner. The white seagull and stars contrast against a sky-blue background and each section represents a different aspect of the city. The blue is for the Naval Air Station located in the bay, the seagull represents the Corpus Christi residents, and the eight stars are the major industries of the city. The flag is proudly displayed at City Hall, a variety of other public facilities, and at many local schools.

Those looking to buy condos in Corpus Christi have a variety of neighborhoods to consider depending on their priorities and lifestyle. Mustang-Padre Island has been rated the most livable area due to its highly regarded beach being classed as the number one destination on the Gulf of Mexico. The island is the longest barrier island in the world and offers residents a relaxing atmosphere with unrivaled proximity to the water.

History of Corpus Christi

History of Corpus Christi

Long before the Europeans came, and even longer before anyone thought about buying a condo in Corpus Christi, the land was known as the Old Indian Trading Grounds. As early as 1829, traders would use the area to smuggle contraband goods that they would later sell and trade in Mexico. In the 1830s, Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney founded Corpus Christi and named it “Kinney’s Trading Post” or “Kinney’s Ranch.” This small trading post was used to sell supplies to a Mexican revolutionary army who were camped nearby to the West. Following the declaration of independence of Texas from Mexico, US troops used the area as a camp to prepare for war. They remained stationed there from July 1845 until March 1846 until a march was made south to Rio Grande and enforced as the southern border of the United States. Corpus Christi was also the site of a civil war in 1862. The August attack from five Union warships that sailed into the Bay of Corpus Christi resulted in considerable damage to the city. Revenge was sought and efforts then began to create a deep-water port. In 1925, the port of Corpus Christi was opened and to this day, it is the sixth-largest in the US, the deepest in the Gulf of Mexico and the 47th largest in the world.
