After the May 24, 1841 battle between the Native Americans of the Village Creek settlement and Texas General Edward H. Tarrant, a trading post was established at Marrow Bone Spring in Arlington. Arlington was founded along the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1876 and was named for the house in Virginia. This house was where General Robert E. Lee lived for thirty years in Arlington County, Virginia. Settlers began arriving in Arlington soon after the Civil War. Then, in 1876, the town had a big break when the Texas & Pacific Railroad, constructing its line between Fort Worth and Dallas, decided to build a station in between and chose Arlington. That same year, the streets were laid out, and in 1877, the post office accepted the name Arlington. April 21, 1884, Arlington was incorporated. It grew as a farming center and a cotton-ginning. Arlington College was founded in 1895, and it became Carlyle Military Academy in 1901, and eventually named the University of Texas at Arlington. The city could boast of electricity, water, telephone service, natural gas, and a public school system in 1910. Arlington began to grow as a tourist destination with the launch of Six Flags over Texas in 1961. In the late nineteenth century, the area's rich soil began attracting farmers, and several agriculture-related businesses were well established. The developments in the city led to a constant increase in the city's population.
