The history of Arlington dates back to 1842 when James Bowie received a land grant from the Mexican government. The grant included land for the building of a fortification. During the Civil War, the fortification became a hospital for both Union and Confederate soldiers. The hospital closed in 1865, but the city would eventually be named after it. The Fort Worth Cavalry was stationed there during the American Civil War. In 1868, there was a flood that washed away the Fort Worth Cavalry's camp. After the flood, the citizens were asked to name the new town. They chose the name "Arlington" because they liked the meaning of "the place where the brave soldiers are buried." In 1874, the first post office opened under the name "Arlington." By the 1880s, the city had become a railroad hub for the north and was growing quickly. In 1890, the population of Arlington was over 4,000. In 1909, the population grew to over 6,000.
