Before the Europeans arrived, Corpus Christi was known as the Old Indian Trading Grounds. In the early 1800s, traders would use the area to smuggle contraband goods that they would later sell and trade in Mexico. In the 1830s, Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney renamed Corpus Christi to “Kinney’s Trading Post” or “Kinney’s Ranch” where supplies were sold to a Mexican revolutionary army. Following the declaration of independence of Texas from Mexico, American troops used the area as a camp to prepare for war. In 1925, the port of Corpus Christi was opened and today it is the sixth largest in the US, the deepest port in the Gulf of Mexico and is the 47th largest in the world.
