You can find Collin County in northeast Texas, with McKinney, the county seat, about 40 minutes northeast of Dallas. Collin McKinney, a drafter and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, was the inspiration for the county's creation in 1846. Collin McKinney (1766-1861), one of the five individuals who penned the Texas Declaration of Independence and the oldest of the 59 men who signed it, was the inspiration for the county and county seats.

Collin County's 851 square miles are entirely within the Blackland Prairie region of Texas, except for a small piece of its western edge. With a height ranging from 450 to 700 feet above sea level, the county's landscape is mainly level to slightly rolling. Collin County's settlement can be separated into two phases. The first occurred between 1840 and 1860, in the early years of the county's history. The next phase started with the entrance of railroads and continued beyond. The county's early economy, which was settled mainly by farmers, was propelled by the coming of railroads.

McKinney, the county seat, and the county are named for Collin McKinney, one of the early immigrants in the area. McKinney was born and raised in New Jersey and resided in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas before moving to northeast Texas in 1830-1831 when the territory was still belonging to Mexico but under an Anglo-American colonization concession.
