History of Dallas

History of Dallas

Historic West End Dallas Texas

No one truly knows the origin of the name. Some sources claim it was named for the United States Vice president George Mifflin Dallas (1845–49). Other sources name Joseph Dallas, an early settler, as the likely inspiration. Regardless, what matters most is that Dallas grew into a friendly state and a commercial hub of international acclaim. It was John Neely Bryan, a lawyer and trader from Tennessee, who reportedly came around in 1839, surveyed the area, planted a stake, and left without much drama. Bryan came back later in 1841 and built a permanent establishment in the form of a cabin. In the nick of time, other settlers started streaming in and helped lay down a town site's foundation in 1844. As the railroads began making their way to the town in the 1870s, commercial growth was spurred, and by the end of the 19th century, the town was shimmering as an industrial city. With this growth, the town attracted workers from all over Texas and neighboring towns. The town was incorporated as a city on February 2, 1856. When the Adams-Onis treaty was signed in 1819, the area where modern Texas lies fell under New Spain. It would remain a Spanish territory until 1821, upon Mexico's declaration of independence from Spain. A total of six flags have flown over Dallas. They include France, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate flag, and that of the United States of America. Agriculture was the main driver of the growth and development of cities in the 19th century, and it was no different for Dallas. The Spanish missionaries grew cotton in the 18th century, and the Anglo- American colonists took it up upon settling in the area. Other industries that thrived at the beginning of the 20th century include food and leather processing and textile manufacturing. Ford Company set up the first automobile plant in 1914, the same year when Dallas was selected as a site to set up the Federal Reserve Bank's Eleventh District.

Dallas, the seat of Dallas County, is situated in North Texas. It sits on approximately 35 square miles of land, with some of the city extending into Denton, Rockwall, Kaufman, and Collin Counties. The Trinity River along which the city was founded remains an essential feature of its modernity. On each side of the river are earthen levees running 50 ft high, helping to protect the city from floods. The city's climate is humid subtropical, like most of its neighbors. However, the general area of its location receives warm, dry winds blowing from the north and west, especially in summer. Summer heat rises well above 100 °F. Winter is much bearable in Dallas, and you can expect a range between 55 °F - 70 °F in the daytime and 35 °F to 50 °F at night. Nonetheless, sometimes during winter, the city experiences strong, cold fronts known as Texas Northern or Blue Northers. They lead to a rapid fall in temperatures and cause dark blue or black skies.
