History of Dallas County Texas

History of Dallas County Texas

Harris County History

Native Americans, such as the Quapaw and Caddo communities, lived in what is known as Dallas today before the Europeans' exploration and settlement in the 18th century. Until 1821 when Mexico became an independent state, the Dallas area was ruled by the Spanish. Dallas was, therefore, part of the Mexican state until 1836 when the area gained independence from Mexico and formed the Republic of Texas.
In 1839, John Neely Bryan visited the Dallas area and left only to return in 1941 when he established a permanent settlement. Bryan not only founded Dallas but also played a huge role in its growth. His home was used as the courthouse and he later donated land for the construction of a courthouse after Dallas became the county seat.
Nine years after the Republic of Texas was formed, the United States annexed it in 1945, and Dallas County was born the following year. By the end of the 19th century, business was booming in Dallas County thanks to the construction of railroads. The city of Dallas started as an industrial center attracting workers from Texas and other neighboring areas.
Although Dallas County started out as a rural area with a myriad of agricultural activities, by 1950, 89.8% of Dallas was considered urban. The same year, the Census Bureau classified the area as Dallas Metropolitan Statistical Area.

It is believed that John Neely Bryan named Dallas after the 11th Vice President of the United States, George Mifflin Dallas. Even so, other theories suggest that the name could have as well originated from a village in Moray, Scotland, known as Dallas.
