Brooklyn History Kings County New York

New York City only saw an economic and construction boom following the Great Depression and World War II with the merger of five boroughs in 1898. Returning World War II soldiers sparked a postwar economic boom in eastern Queens and Nassau County and similar suburban communities in New Jersey. New York emerged unscathed as the world's most important metropolis, with Wall Street guiding America's position as the world's main economic force. The completion of the United Nations Headquarters in 1952 cemented New York's worldwide geopolitical power. The city profited from a drop in violent crime rates across the country, the rebirth of the banking industry, and the creation of "Silicon Alley," one of the drivers in a decade of skyrocketing real estate values. Life was not a bed of roses post this. New York City was also the victim of the September 11 attack–a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center that killed 2,606 people in the towers and the surrounding region, which was profoundly traumatic for the city but did not halt the rapid rebuilding.

Map showing New York

New York City lies in the northeastern United States. The city's growth is facilitated by its strategic location right next to the Hudson River, which flows into a naturally sheltered harbor before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. The majority of New York City might be one of the most populated cities int he nation, but it lacks in one prime factor–land. The city is surrounded by water and consists of three islands: Long Island, Manhattan, and Staten Island. The Hudson River flows into New York Bay through the Hudson Valley, and the river is an estuary between New York City and Troy, New York. The Hudson River separates the city from the state of New Jersey in the United States. The East River, a tidal river that runs between the Bronx, Manhattan and Long Island, runs from Long Island Sound. The Harlem River, a tidal channel connecting the East and Hudson rivers, creates a division between the Bronx and Manhattan. The Bronx River is the city's sole freshwater river, flowing through the Bronx and Westchester County.
