Before European contact, “Manhattan” was a part of a region called Lenapehoking. It was inhabited by both the Wappinger and Munsee Lenape tribes (as they are known today). While the French technically explored the area first, Manhattan and its surroundings were first mapped by Henry Hudson in 1609. The Dutch established a fur trading settlement on Governors Island in 1625, and established Fort Amsterdam on the tip of Manhattan the same year. The island was said to have been purchased from natives for 60 Guilders (just under $1000 in 2020 dollars), though this is perhaps apocryphal. It was ceded to the English in 1674, and became a part of New England generally.

When the island of Manhattan fell into English hands, their colony in the region was already called New York, in honor of York in England. The county was named for the city of New York, though, its county seat even before the county was completely swallowed by the city. Of course, all of this happened long before you could buy mobile homes in New York County.

One reason so many people are eager to buy mobile homes and other property in New York County is that it is the sheer cache that Manhattan represents. Buying a mobile home in New York County, even if it is properly in Marble Hill, makes you a member of an elite club.

Another great reason to buy a mobile home in New York County is the easy access to all of NYC. Is Buying A Mobile Home In New York County A Good Idea? Possibly. You wouldn’t be the first to buy a mobile home in New York County, NY and re-style it a “single-family manufactured home.” They can be hard to find (and expensive to site!), but living in a mobile home in the heart of New York City is a statement all on its own. You certainly won’t lack access to industry, commerce, culture or nightlife, and in fact a modern manufactured home might just offer better accommodation than the 2-room dwellings half a mile above the streets some people pay millions for. At least you’ll never have to take the stairs when the elevators fail.
