Suffolk County is located in the easternmost county in the state of New York in the United States. Suffolk County is on Long Island's eastern end, but it also has some islands. The county is the largest on Long Island and is rich in history, with a coastline of about 1000 miles.

Suffolk County was part of the Connecticut Colony until 1662, when the British took control of Nieuw Amsterdam and renamed it New York, in honor of King Charles II's brother, the Duke of York. Unfortunately, the King redrew some lines while at it and added Long Island to the spoils. Suffolk is New York State's leading agricultural county because of its moderate climate, plentiful clean water, and excellent soil.

Suffolk County got its name after the English county of Suffolk, where the region's first European inhabitants came from. When white immigrants arrived in the 17th century, the area was occupied by Montauk Indians. One of New York's founding counties, it was founded in 1683.

Greenport's commercial and population growth accelerated after the railroad was completed in 1844. The county became a famous destination for stylish suburban and communities, especially in the eastern portion known as the Hamptons and a market gardening center for New York City.
