Brooklyn History Kings County New York

The Dutch were the first Europeans to colonize Long Island and the land which would become present-day Queens County. In 1635 the New Netherland colony was formed and shortly thereafter in 1645 the colony of Vlissingen was formed. Vissingen would later go on to be known as Flushing, NY. English settlers living under Dutch law inhabited the colonies of Jamaica and Elmhurst, but in 1664 the entire area was under control of the British and renamed to New York.

On November 1, 1683, Queens County became a county along with Kings County (Brooklyn) and Richmond County (Staten Island).

There were five towns in Queens County in the late 17th and early 18th centuries – Flushing, Hempstead, Jamaica, Newton and Oyster Bay. Jamaica was originally the county seat. In 1898, Queens County and all of its cities were consolidated as a borough of NYC and all other municipal governments in the country were dissolved.

This is actually a subject of debate for many historians. The Queen at the time of Queens County’s creation was Catherine of Braganza (formerly Princess Caterina of Portugal). Although the exact identity of the “queen” was never declared, there is also no other queen who the county could have been named after.
