Bronx County, one of the five boroughs of New York City, has been in existence for many years. During the 20th century, this county's history can be divided into four sections: a thriving period between 1900-29 where the population grew six times from 200,000 people in 1900 to around 1.3 million in 1930. While this period saw Bronx County's rise in population and economic development, the post World War II years and the Great Depression slowed down the growth and caused the eventual decline.
Between 1950-85, Bronx County experienced difficult times transforming from a moderate-income county to a lower-income area. There were also high poverty and violent crime rates in some parts of the county. However, in the late 1800s, Bronx County experienced a developmental and economic resurgence. The resurgence continues today, making Bronx County one of the most developed counties in the country. For many generations, Bronx County mainly was a rural area with small farms that supplied produce to city markets.

The railroad construction saw the Bronx develop even faster, with its population rising significantly. There was also a switch from horse-drawn streetcars to an advanced subway and railway system.
The railway linked Bronx County to Manhattan, making travel faster and more luxurious. Since the 1990s, the Bronx has experienced significant development, first estimated by the county's 10-year housing plan that saw houses in Bronx County almost double their value. The community members were also working diligently to rebuild the economic, social, and environmental infrastructure by creating quality and affordable housing.
