Brooklyn History Kings County New York

Nassau County came into existence in 1899 after Queens County was split. During this split, the western part of Queens joined with the New York City borough in 1898, leaving the three towns in the east. One of Nassau County's first inhabitants was European settlers. Other early inhabitants were Native Americans who comprised the Matinecoc, Massapequa, and Sacatogue. The Dutch settlers in New Netherland took over the western part of Long Island, while English settlers from Connecticut took the western portion.
With well-structured, extensive flat land, Nassau County was the site of many aviation trials and experiments. Military aviators for both World War I and II were trained on the Hempstead Plains. The area had installations like Mitchel Air Force Base, where several aircraft companies were established. The county was the site where Charles Lindberg took off for Paris in 1927, completing the first nonstop trans-Atlantic flight from the U.S.
Nassau County also briefly hosted the United Nations Security Council from 1946 to 1951. The council meetings were held at the Sperry Gyroscope headquarters near the border with Queens County. At this site, the Security Council voted back the then United States President Harry S Truman. The council also sent a coalition of forces to the Korean Peninsula, triggering the Korean War.
