History of New York

The story begins with Jonas Bronck buying land for sale in Bronx County in New York for sale in the early 1600s. He bought the land from native americans who were the original settlers. Bronck intended to use this land to farm tobacco, but the area was unsuitable for industrial-scale farming due to its hilly rough and bushy terrain.

The Europeans began colonizing the Bronx in 1639, slowly converting the borough into their new home. They bought land in Bronx County, New York, displacing the Native Americans as they transformed the area into an urban settlement. Most early migrants came from Ireland, Italy, Germany, and Eastern Europe. Later immigrants came from Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and African Americans who came from the U.S. southern states.

Originally part of Westchester County, the Bronx was ceded to New York County in two parts, West Bronx in 1874 and East Bronx in 1895. In 1914 Bronx County was separate from New York County. Much of Bronx County’s development can be attributed to its strategic location, between New England and Manhattan.

During the 1960s, there was a sharp decline in the quality of life in the Bronx, which affected livable housing, population, and crime. A wave of arson struck the area in the 1970s, turning the place into a shell between the 1980s and 1990s. The urban decay was severe. However, things started turning around in the late 90s, and they’ve been improving ever since. Today land in Bronx County, New York, is in demand thanks to its improved fortune.

New York

The Bronx got its name from a Swedish migrant settler named Jonas Bronck. The Native Americans he bought the territory from referred to the area as “The Bronck’s Land,” which is why it’s called “The Bronx.” Before that, the Native American Siwanoy and the band of Lenape called the area Rananchqu. Other Native Americans called it Keskeskeck.
