The history of New York can be traced to the 1500s, when native Americans occupied the territory. The first documented visit to the area was by Italian Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The Italian, working under the French crown's stewardship claimed the area for France and named it "Nouvelle Angouleme" (New Angouleme). Captain Estevao Gomes led a Spanish expedition to the territory in 1525 and charted the Hudson River, which he named Rio de San Antonio. New York played a crucial role during the Revolutionary War. It was at the heart of campaigns in New York and was also the British military center of operations until they were driven out in 1783.
