The city of New York has 8,804,190 residents, making it the most populous city in the United States. An area of 300.46 square miles and a population density of 28,491 people per square mile also ranks it as the most densely populated major city in the country. The population of New York City is more than twice the second most populous city, Los Angeles. Data from the 2020 census showed that the city gained 629,000 residents between 2010 and 2020, the highest in the country within that time frame. This number becomes more staggering when one considers that the following four most populous cities did not gain up to that number when combined.

The racial makeup of New York's population as of 2020 was 30.9% White, 28.7% Hispanic or Latino, 15.6% Asian, 20.2% Black or African American, and 0.2% Native American. New York has always been one of the major ports of entry for immigrants. The city was previously termed the "melting pot" due to its immigrant-dominated Lower East Side. A mammoth 37% of its population are foreign-born, while over half of its children are born to mothers who are immigrants. The New York metropolitan area consists of New York, its surrounding cities and neighborhoods and has a population of 20.1 million, making it the most populous in the United States.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked New York City on average as having the best higher education institutions of any city worldwide. The City University of New York(CUNY) system caters for over half a million students, making it the largest globally. Columbia University is a private Ivy League research university that was founded in 1754 in New York City. First established as King's College, Columbia University is the oldest institution of higher education in New York. It offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degrees. Some of the other higher institutions are Cooper Union, New York Institute of Technology, Yeshiva University, Bernard College and Pratt Institute.
