History of Warren

History of Warren

Map of Southeast Michigan

When Joseph Wampler surveyed the land now Warren and Center Line, Michigan, he found a lot of swamps that some Indians and a few settlers were using. So first, landowners put up the properties for sale. On record, Charles Groesbeck moved into this area in 1830. Soon, his brother Louis joined him, and his cousin Charles Rivard, with whom he was also very close. In 1837, when Michigan became a state, Louis moved to what is now the northwest corner of 12 Mile and a mound. He helped organize Hickory Township (later Aba, then Warren), called Hickory Township. Louis' grandson, Alex Groesbeck, was born on the same property in 1872 and became Michigan's 30th governor. He is recognized for "bringing Michigan out of the muck" by starting the state's modern road network. Thus, there is a highway named after him called M-97. Also, a state monument erected in honor of Gov. Groesbeck is near the entrance to the GM Tech Center on Mound Road, near the access to the GM plant. Hickory Township was incorporated into the Village of Warren, which still exists today. Numerous attempts have been made to rehabilitate and protect the village area, culminating in the region's recognition as a State Historic Site.
