History of the Wayne County
With a teeming population of about 1.8 million people, this beautiful county found in Detroit has one of the largest populations in Michigan. It also ranks nineteenth out of the country's most populated counties. It has a size of 613 square miles, with water covering a more significant part. Wayne County is governed by a home rule charter, with structures established within state law and the constitution. Founded in 1779, Wayne County included the Upper Peninsula, minor areas of the Upper Peninsula, and the entire Lower Michigan Peninsula. Later, these places were eventually allotted to Ohio, Michigan's neighboring state.

The county was divided into four different townships on November 1, 1798. These four townships are Detroit, Hamtramck, Mackinaw, and Sargent. Its territory later expanded to include Indiana, Ohio, and parts of Wisconsin. However, by the 1800s, these limits came into place, limiting the county's expansion into neighboring states and preserving the region's territorial integrity.

How Wayne County got its name
This county, just like several others, got its name after combat heroes. General Anthony Wayne was a unique and revolutionary figure, well-trusted, excellent, and extraordinary. Wayne County came into existence in his name. Due to his unwavering commitment and "go-getter" attitude, he earned the nickname "Mad Anthony." Because of his bravery, he received such an honor. He was one of the county's first citizens, belonging to the Amish Christian religious sect and a famous municipality in the United States.
