Map of Southeast Michigan

The area currently known as Warren city was originally a settlement known as Beebe’s Corner which was originally founded in 1830 and was situated on the corner of Mound’s Road and Chicago Road. The settlement used to be a stop for carriages for the cities of Detroit and Utica since it had conveniences such as a distillery, a tavern, a mill, and a trading post. Finally, in 1837 the settlement became a part of the Warren township (now defunct) and was originally named Hickory, then Alba, and shortly after was named Warren which according to some was to honor the hero of the American Revolution Joseph Warren. However, others claim it was named after a veteran of the War of 1812 who was a frontier cleric and a Methodist Episcopal preacher. He is also considered to be the first preacher who was licensed by the state of Michigan and was well known and respected as he established congregations, baptized, married, and preached to the people extensively in the region. On April 28, 1893 the settlement officially became a part of the Village of Warren which gradually grew over time, and by 1957 the village and the surrounding area excluding the Center Line (a region that is currently a city within the city of Warren) were incorporated as a city. The population of the region continued to grow for various reasons such as the construction of the Chrysler’s Truck Assembly Plant in 1938. Later on, the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant was established in 1940 to assist during WWII and in the years 1949 and 1956 work on the General Motors Assembly Plant was done. Between 1950 and 1960, the population of the city doubled due to white flight and the flow of people from the southern city of Detroit.
