History of Warren

History of Warren

Map of Southeast Michigan

Warren began as a stopping point village for travelers from Detroit and Utica in the early 19th century. It was initially named Beebe's Corners in 1830 after John L. Beebe, who established a toll gate at the corner of Mound Road and Chicago Road. The now-defunct Warren Township was formulated seven years later in 1837 as the settlement gradually expanded. The town first went by the name of Hickory, then Aba in 1838, and was finally renamed Warren shortly after the 1812 war by veteran Rev. Abel Warren. Warren village recorded a population of 727 in 1950, up from 582 in 1940. After that, the township grew at a much faster pace. Then, in 1957, it and the surrounding township of Warren were established as a city by an act of incorporation. Subsequently, its population soared from slightly over 42,000 to over 89,000 inhabitants in just ten years between 1950 and 1960. The rapid growth was due to the post-World War II baby boom and the Detroit White Flight. Because of this, more people established homes in Warren, skyrocketing the population to an all-time high of 179,000 in 1970. Apart from the population, the city also received a significant facelift. Early reports provide evidence of the area covered with wood planks characteristic of roads built over a swampy area. However, after receiving city status, Warren dramatically changed its infrastructure. Consequently, it quickly developed into an industrial hub after World War II. The rapid growth is attributable partly to the construction of the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant, specifically erected for mass tank production. Interestingly, Warren also played an integral role in equipping the U.S. Army with equipment. As a result, Warren became one of the fastest-growing cities until the 1970s. Today, Warren is fondly known as the "City of Progress," although it remains a modest suburban city. It is also home to wide-ranging businesses and is the proud headquarters of Big Boy Restaurants International. You can be part of this history of progress by buying a condo in Warren, MI.
