For many years, the history of Hillsborough County was synonymous with the history of Tampa since the area was sparsely populated, especially outside of the city. Originally, Tampa was home to a number of tribes including the Calusa and Timucua peoples, who were later replaced by the Seminoles. The area was visited by Spanish explorers in the 16th century and settlement at Tampa began with Fort Brooke, a military base. From there, the region grew, with the population expanding considerably after the arrival of the railroad in 1884. The development of port facilities and the promotion of tourism helped as well. Further economic development took place when cigar manufacturing was introduced in 1886.
