Fruit Orlando History Florida

The history of Orlando can be traced back to 1838 and the height of the Seminole Wars. to protect settlers from attacks by Indians, The United States Army built Fort Gatlin south of the present-day Orlando City limits. As a result, a small community began to grow around the Fort by 1840. The town was first known as Jernigan. It was named after the Jernigan family, who had established the first permanent settlement in the area. Jernigan established a post office on May 30, 1850. About six years later, the town officially changed its name to Orlando, and the U.S. Post Office embraced the name change in 1857. That same year, the town of Orlando was incorporated as a city having 85 inhabitants, 22 of whom were qualified voters. Orlando became famous during the years between the Spanish–American War and World War I. It experienced extensive housing development during the Florida Land Boom, thereby causing an increase in land prices in the 1920s. During World War II, many Army personnel were positioned at the Orlando Army Air Base and within reach of the Pinecastle Army AirField. Some of these servicemen remained in Orlando to settle and raise families.

Art enthusiasts founded the Orlando Museum of Art in 1924. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to the service of greater Orlando, Orange County, and Central Florida. In 1960 the museum's name was changed to the Loch Haven Art Center, and in 1986, it switched back to the Orlando Museum of Art.

The museum began to collect art in 1960 when it accepted the donations of critical American paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe and Charles Sheeler and was then designated a "major cultural institution" by the State of Florida in 1985. In 1997, it had a 13.5million facility renovation and building projects, which resulted in an 80,000 square feet increase in size.

The Orlando Museum of Art launched an exhibition initiative in 2014 called The Florida Prize in Contemporary Art, which features artworks from mid-career artists living and working in the State of Florida today. It has also actively purchased work by living artists over the past 30 years, and this period is one of the collection's strengths. The most extensive section of the Museum's permanent collection is the Contemporary Art Collection.
