History of Orlando

History of Orlando

Fruit Orlando History Florida

Orlando's town territory was laid out in 1857. At inception, it consisted of just four streets surrounding the courthouse square. The Reconstruction Era after the Civil War brought about a population explosion to the territory, which led to the official incorporation of Orlando as a town on July 31, 1875, with 85 residents. Orlando was finally incorporated as a city in 1885. The period from 1875 to 1895 is fondly remembered as Orlando's Golden Era, during which it became the hub of Florida's citrus industry. The Great Freeze, which forced many independent grove owners to hand them over to a few citrus barons, ended the city's golden age. The Freeze forced many Orlandoans to find solace elsewhere, with the majority moving to California and the Caribbean. Orlando was a popular resort during the years between the Spanish-American War and World War I. The city experienced massive housing development during the Florida Land Boom, leading to an increase in land prices. Several neighborhoods around downtown were constructed during the Florida Land Boom. However, this period was brought to an abrupt end by several hurricanes that hit Florida in the late 1920s and the worldwide economic depression in the 1930s.
