Miami, Florida, was ceremoniously incorporated on July 28, 1896, with just about 300 residents, and founded by Julia Tuttle, the first and only female to be the founder of a major American city. The name "Miami" is gotten from the word Mayaimi which happens to be the Native American people who lived around lake mayaimi and is now referred to as Lake Okeechobee. The term "Maiyaimi" means water in the languages of the mayaimi, Tequesta, and Calusa tribes. The city of Miami was also known as "Biscayne Bay Country" in the early stages of its growth. Some published accounts during that time described the city as a wilderness with much promise. The city of Miami was also described as "one of the finest building sites in Florida." Nevertheless, the Great Freeze that took place in 1894 changed everything, and the crops of the city of Miami were the only ones in Florida that survived. Miami thrived greatly during the 1920s but slowly debilitated after the fall in the land boom of 1925, then the 1926 Miami Hurricane, and the Great Depression in the 1930s. Soon after, World War II began, which resulted in the increase of the population in Miami to almost half a million, and the location of the city played a vital role in the battle fought against German submarines.
