History

During the 16th century, the Spaniards discovered a village that was inhabited by Tequesta Indians. In their attempt to conquer the Tequesta, the Spaniards established a mission in the area. In 1763, the area was surrendered to Great Britain but it was regained back by the Spaniards in 1783. In 1821, Florida was acquired by the United States. Then, in 1836, Fort Dallas was constructed and it served as a base when the Seminole Wars exploded. Some settlers, including William B. Brickell and Julia D. Tuttle (the “mother of Miami”) decided to transfer to the area. In 1896, Brickell and Tuttle asked Henry M. Flagler to expand the Florida East Coast Railway to the area in exchange for half of their land. Finally, Flagler agreed to expand the railroad when the winter of 1894-1895 devastated Florida’s citrus crop. Furthermore, Flagler constructed the Royal Palm Hotel, which is the start of promoting tourism. In that same year, Miami was incorporated.
