History of Cuyahoga County Real Estate in Ohio
Every geographical area and community has a past, and the history of Cuyahoga County in Ohio is no different. You can go back 2,000 years to find that the Hopewell Mound Builders lived in this area with the Adena group of people. But going so far back is not as relatable as understanding that Cuyahoga County was once home to various First Nation People like the Huron, Delaware, Shawnee, Wyandot, and Miami tribes.

In 1662 as the Europeans began to fill up the area and move towards the interior, King Charles II of England gave a portion of the land around southern Lake Erie to Connecticut. After that, more land exchanges took place, but Connecticut’s sale of land at a mere $0.40 an acre to the Connecticut Land Company in 1796 firmly established the origins of Cuyahoga County.

General Moses Cleaveland surveyed the land and, after much traveling with fifty men and two women, came upon the place of the crooked river. Cleaveland used the familiar New England town planning style to build a city, beginning with green common space. Today, this green common remains in the form of the central Public Square.

As politics and power changed, Connecticut became Ohio as more land exchanges took place. By 1803, Ohio’s population expanded to over 60,000 people, ensuring it achieved this mark of statehood. On March 1, 1803, Ohio became the 17th state in the U.S.

The Cuyahoga County and its Namesake
Once Ohio reached statehood, its real estate issues were just beginning. First, the state authorities had to divide the sparsely populated areas into manageable counties. So, they created Trumbull County, from which Geauga County was later formed in 1806. The Ohio General Assembly then created Cuyahoga County from Geauga in 1808, which gained complete independence on January 16, 1810, and became official on May 1, 1810.
Many states and counties take their names from people who discovered or did something to earn this recognition. However, Cuyahoga County takes its name from the Mohawk word meaning the crooked river or the Senecas word meaning the “place of the jawbone.” Since Cuyahoga County was officially established in 1810, its borders have continued to move and change with the times.
