Cuyahoga is part of New France or what later became known as Canada. The French handed over their land to the British in 1763, who then called it the Quebec province. In 1795, the Connecticut Land Company bought the land from the Western Reserve in the Northwest Territory. Before the division of this region, Ohio state was occupied by Algonquin and Iroquois speaking Native Americans and the Hopewell period’s mound builders.

As time progressed, Ohio continued to attract fur traders, comprising people from Canada and the U.S., many originating from Europe. Settlers in Ohio became prominent after the formation of the U.S., following the revolution, with Ohio and other states abolishing slavery. Ohio officially became the 17th free state of the Union on March 1, 1803.

Today, the majority of people in Ohio can trace their ancestors to the New York, Pennsylvania, and New England areas (and to Europe before this time). Ohio settlers brought ongoing progress in the state, including industrial development. As politics and power dynamics changed, Ohio also attracted massive migrations of African Americans fleeing southern states. This state lent its support to the Union during the American Civil War.

Cuyahoga County Namesake
Ohio gets its name from the Iroquois ohi-yo, meaning great river, because this state is characterized by over 40,000 miles of rivers and other waterways that run through the region. Likewise, Cuyahoga is an Iroquois word meaning a crooked river. Combine these elements with Ohio’s location near Lake Erie, and you have an area that attracted enormous attention in the past and continues to draw visitors and settlers alike.
