The beginnings of this city were in the settlement of Franklinton. Columbus was designed to be the capital of Ohio because of the central location and easy access to rivers and the railroad. Columbus was founded in 1812 and in 1816, was named the capital which was moved from the previous capital, Chillicothe. Later, the settlement of Franklinton was absorbed into the city and remains a popular area for Columbus, Ohio real estate today. In 1990, Columbus became Ohio’s largest city. The economy has been strong in Columbus since the years following the Civil War when manufacturing and transportation contributed to the city's growth and economic boom. The city of Columbus was named after explorer Christopher Columbus, said to have discovered the land.
