History of Columbus

History of Columbus

ohio history

Columbus, Ohio, originated as a Native American settlement on the banks of the Scioto River. In 1812, the city was founded at the junction of the Olentangy and Scioto rivers and became the state capital. In 1816, the city began functioning as the state capital and as the county seat of Franklin County in 1824. The city was named after an Italian explorer known as Christopher Columbus and was planned to be a political center by the Ohio legislature in 1812. Instead, the city was a major center for the volunteer Union Army during the Civil War. It was home to about 26,000 troops and held up to 9,000 war prisoners at Camp Chase, now known as the Hilltop neighborhood of West Columbus. On February 10, 1816, Columbus was incorporated as a city. The state government moved to Columbus from Chillicothe, and the city later absorbed the nearby earlier settlement of Franklinton, founded in 1797. Columbus experienced growth after the Feeder branch of the Erie Canal and Ohio was opened in 1831, and the Cumberland National Road from Maryland reached the city in 1836. As a result, Columbus began experiencing major development in the 1950s. It became the largest city in Ohio and gained a lot of population by the early 1990s.
