History of Toledo

History of Toledo

ohio history

In 1794, General "Mad Anthony" Wayne fought and won the Battle of Fallen Timbers nearby and built a stockade fort called Fort Industry. The city's inclusion within the state of Ohio resulted from the settlement of the "Toledo War" between Michigan and Ohio over control of this territory. Before the coming of Europeans, Indians lived in a village on the present site of Toledo. In the early age of Toledo, the area was also called "Frogtown" because wetland areas along the banks of the Maumee and surrounding settlements were known for having a large number of frogs. The city then became a destination for several railroad lines as well as a place for manufacturing companies, breweries, furniture companies, and others to be situated. By 1880, Toledo had over fifty thousand people, making it one of the largest cities in the state. In the late nineteenth century, many immigrants started to make Toledo their place of residence because of the factory jobs available. The city then continued to witness growth in population and industry in the early twentieth century. As a result, it had one of the highest industrial development rates in the United States as of the 1920s.
