The county was created from part of Anson County. During the American Revolution, the Mecklenburg residents were die-hard supporters of ardent. Lord Cornwallis called the area "Hornet's Nest," a proudly adopted reference by the locals. After the American Civil War, many towns were created in Mecklenburg, marking it as a vital cotton processing area. During World war I, Camp Greene was formed in Charlotte. The training camp attracted recruits from Mecklenburg, leading to the county's population doubling.
