History of Raleigh

north carolina history

Raleigh was established as the capital city of North Carolina in 1792. It was first known as the Wake Courthouse, then later on it was renamed Raleigh. The name Raleigh was taken from the name of Sir Walter Raleigh, who tried to develop the first English colony in the 1580s. In 1788, a State Convention was held to find a location for the seat of government. As a result, one thousand acres of land were bought from Joel Lane. It was in 1794 when the first capitol was completed, however, it was burned in 1831. A new building was completed in 1840 as its replacement. It is situated in the center of a large square and is recognized as the perfect example of Greek Revival architecture. There are various churches as well as historic and state buildings surrounding Capitol Square. Raleigh was used as a Confederate headquarters during the American Civil War.
