History of Charlotte

History of Charlotte

President Polk Historic Site Charlotte North Carolina

Before the arrival of European colonizers, the Charlotte area was home to the Catawba Native Americans. The Catawba tribe's population was 10,000 strong before the arrival of the Europeans, but it dropped to 110 in 1826 due to the smallpox disease brought by European colonizers. European colonizers settled in the area in 1755. These settlers named the village after the German princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who became the Queen Consort of Great Britain and Ireland in 1761. It is nicknamed "Queen City" due to this background. It is also nicknamed the "Hornet's Nest" because its citizens rebelled against a British commander during the American Revolutionary War. In 1768, the city of Charlotte was incorporated, being first known as Charlottesburgh. However, some British maps of that time reflected the settlement as Charlottetown, which Scots-Irish Presbyterians immigrants built. German immigrants also settled in the area and assisted in founding the city, but they existed in small numbers at the time. The city also earned the nickname "The City of Churches" because it has been the home of many different denominations in the 19th century, including the Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist, Episcopal, Lutheran, and Roman Catholic religions. Charlotte was also a part of the gold rush throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. This connection led to the subsequent establishment of the Charlotte Mint in 1837. After the Civil War, the city experienced an economic boom. Next, businesspeople set up a cotton processing center and a railroad hub. By 1880, the city's population had grown to 7,084. By 1910, the town had become North Carolina's largest city. After World War I, the city's population grew when many soldiers and suppliers decided to set down roots. The population grew to over 48,000 people by 1920. Charlotte, affectionately known as "The Queen City," "Crown Town," "Buzz City," and "The QC," is known for its friendly, diverse, and creative people ready to welcome you with open arms.

The city of Charlotte is 308.6 square miles in size, with only 2.0 square miles of that being water. Charlotte currently has a total of 199 neighborhoods. The city fills most of Mecklenburg County and sits on top of a long rise between Sugar Creek and Irwin Creek. The city planners also built the town on the gunnies of the St. Catherine's and Rudisill gold mines. Due to the lack of large bodies of water in or near the city, it has become a highway, rail, and air transportation hub. The large water bodies, such as the Catawba River, are located in the western part of the state.
