History of Greensboro

History of Greensboro

north carolina history

North Carolina was first settled on the coast, but there were some important moments in history that took place further west. Battles in the Revolutionary War were fought in multiple places and one of those was in present-day Greensboro. The city was named for General Nathaniel Greene, who led American forces in battle during the Revolutionary War. While the city is steeped in Revolutionary War history and the theme permeates multiple parts of the city, it is also home to one of our nation’s early First Ladies, Dolly Madison. She was the wife of James Madison, the Fourth President of the United States. Later, the Gate City benefitted when Moses and Ceasar Cone came south from Maryland and eventually started Cone Mills. While the company might be closed, the Cone legacy continues with Moses Cone Hospital. Downtown at the Woolworth’s lunch counter became a historic spot since it was part of the sit-ins of the Civil Rights movement. The store is now the International Civil Rights Museum and the lunch counter has been restored.
