History

Following the Revolutionary War, Greensboro was named for American Major General Nathaniel Greene. He led the U.S. forces during the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in 1781. In the early 1840’s North Carolina state government designated Greensboro as a stop on a new railroad line. Stimulated by the rail traffic, the city’s population increased, and Greensboro soon became known as the Gate City since it has been a transportation hub for the Piedmont. The city attracted leaders of industry such as Moses and Caesar Cone of Baltimore, Maryland. The Cones established large textile mills which helped turn Greensboro from a sleepy village into a city. It didn’t take long for Greensboro to become a southern U.S. leader in the textile industry. Cone Mills Corporation started in Greensboro and closed early in the 21st century. But the Cone legacy continues with Moses Cone Hospital. The Civil Rights movement’s sit-ins happened at the lunch counter at Woolworth's downtown. The four participants were from North Carolina A&T State University, which is on the east side of town. The former Woolworth’s building is now the International Civil Rights Museum and it opened in 2010.

Greensboro is the county seat of Guilford County and is in the central part of the state in the Piedmont Triad. Bordering counties include Rockingham and Forsyth counties. Danville, Va. is a short drive from the Gate City and that can be done on U.S. 29 through Rockingham County. Winston-Salem is the county seat of Forsyth County and is a short drive on westbound Interstate 40. Charlotte is a short trip on I-85 and the Research Triangle area that includes Raleigh and Durham is reachable on eastbound I-40.

Greensboro demographics

Greensboro has a population of 299,035 according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 figures. That’s an increase from the 2010 count of 269,666. The county’s population has increased by 28 percent since 2000. While manufacturing might look different, it’s still the leading industry, according to the Guilford County Economic Development Alliance.
There are 100,000 manufacturing workers in Greensboro and High Point. There are 15,000 employees in the aerospace and aviation industry. The county’s two largest cities have 3,000 employed in music and the arts.
There are over 5,000 degrees and certificates available in life sciences and health-related fields. Greensboro and High Point have an educated workforce as 66 percent have attended a college or university.

With multiple colleges and universities, a large arena that’s capable of holding major events, and one of the state’s largest school systems, there is always an opportunity to take in the arts and other forms of entertainment in Greensboro.
Starting at UNC Greensboro, there’s the Weatherspoon Art Gallery. It’s a great museum that has an awesome collection of paintings. It has exhibitions that are open to the public. For those seeking independent schools, two options include Greensboro Day and New Garden Friends schools. The UNC system has two campuses in the Gate City: UNC Greensboro and N.C. A&T State University. UNCG was founded in 1891 and from 1932 to 1963 it was known as the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina. In 1964, men were admitted as part of the student body. Guilford Technical Community College has a campus in Greensboro and others throughout the county. There are several private schools that provide smaller student populations and class sizes. They offer a better opportunity to talk with professors and time to develop relationships with other students. Bennett College is a private school for women and is the only single-gender college or university in the city. Greensboro College is just a short walk up Walker Avenue from UNC Greensboro. The campus is on Market Street with several buildings that involve just a short walk between each of them. Guilford College is in the western end of town on West Friendly Avenue. It provides an array of continuing education classes and can be a great resource for those that want to look at changing careers. No matter the preference, there is always a choice for education. The amount of industry in Greensboro can give some students a place to gain experience before they earn their degree. For some students, they have an opportunity to stay in the city and experience it as a resident. There are many options for those buying land in Greensboro.
