History of Fulton County Georgia

Stone Mountain (Atlanta area

The history of Fulton County is unique as it is made up of fifteen cities to make what is known as Metro-Atlanta. One of the earliest people living in Fulton County were the Cherokee and the Creek Indians. According to the New Georgia Encyclopedia, it became home to the white men and women in 1822, and was, by an act of the legislature, taken from half of Dekalb County on December 20, 1853. The county was number 144 out of Georgia’s 159 counties.
Also, Fulton County is home to popular businesses, such as AT&T, Coca-Cola, Georgia-Pacific, the United Parcel Service, and many others. It was in 1980 that Atlanta businessman Ted Turner, who owned Turner Broadcasting System, decided to establish the first and around-the-clock news service in the world, CNN, in his home city.

History of Georgia

Fulton County was originally thought to be named after a man named Robert Fulton, but that was incorrect information. According to the New Georgia Encyclopedia, Fulton County was actually named after an engineer and land surveyor, Hamilton Fulton. He was able to convince the state officials that it would be more important to build a railroad, and not a canal, to link several locations together. In fact, it was the railroad that played an important part during the Civil War, because it was where most of the arsenal and ammunition were kept and stored. The railroad was also used to transport men and supplies to where they were needed. Because of its importance, it was attacked, destroyed, and burned by Sherman, on his march to the sea.
