In 1733, Georgia’s founder James Edward Oglethorpe founded Savannah, the Georgia colony’s keystone. Oglethorpe and his co-planner created a town containing wards around central squares. Diverse ethnic populations soon arrived to settle in the city. During the Revolutionary War’s lead-up, Savannah’s citizens were relatively slow to embrace separation from British rule. However, several prominent Georgia men later signed the Declaration of Independence. Before the Civil War, Savannah was a major agricultural center, growing lucrative cotton and rice crops. The city had also become known as an international shipping center. Throughout the Civil War, Savannah was blockaded from the sea, cutting off the population’s food and supplies. Savannah also fell to the Union’s General Sherman during his March to the Sea. However, Sherman spared the city from destruction. After the Reconstruction period, Savannah regained its cotton-growing prominence. The region also exported naval stores products. The boll weevil caused an early 20th century cotton industry decimation. Food processing and paper-pulp industries sprang up to fill the economic gap. During World War II, Savannah’s shipyard built many Liberty Ship transports. The city also played a key role in the civil rights movement during the 1950s and 1960s. Today, Savannah is a top United States seaport with constantly expanding facilities. Savannah’s major industries include food, paper, chemicals, aircraft, and shipbuilding. Savannah also hosts several U.S. Army installations.
