Atlanta - Your Metropolis
Atlanta, also known as The ATL, A-town, and Hotlanta, is the city for the people and known for many other things. Its rich history and cultures shine through the music it produces today, through its Southern Hospitality, its food, art, and even its sports teams, like the Braves, Falcons, and Hawks.

History of Atlanta

History of Atlanta

History Before European colonists arrived in modern-day Atlanta, it was the home ground of the indigenous Creek people. A Creek village known as Standing Peachtree was the closest Native American settlement to what is now modern-day Atlanta. However, the indigenous Creek people were forced out of their land in 1821 due to the Indian Removal by the federal government before European American colonists arrived. Atlanta had a population of close to 10,000 people by 1860, when it became a strategic hub for distributing military weaponry and supplies during the Civil War. This distribution advantage was due to Atlanta's multiple railroads. As a result, when the Union Army captured Chattanooga in 1864, Atlanta became the location for many major battles. Authorities ordered all public buildings to be destroyed in September 1864 when Confederate General John Bell Hood decided to retreat from Atlanta. The Confederates then surrendered the city to the Union Army and ordered the evacuation of the population in November 1864. The Confederates also ordered the destruction of the city's remaining military assets around this time. The Civil War ended in 1865, which meant the rebuilding of Atlanta could begin. This period of rebuilding came to be known as the Reconstruction era. The city's reconstruction meant that new jobs became available, which would attract the masses. By 1880, Atlanta had become the site of Georgia’s largest city. Atlanta also became an educational hub when it established universities and colleges. For example, the city founded the Georgia School of Technology (now known as Georgia Tech) and the Atlanta University Center in 1885. Ten years later, in 1895, the city hosted the Cotton States and International Exposition, which 800,000 people attended. The city became the center of social justice after African American veterans returned from World War II seeking full rights. Atlanta was also an essential location for the civil rights movement in the 1960s, led by Martin Luther King Jr., together with students from historically black colleges and universities. This movement led to public transportation desegregation in 1959 and public schools by 1973. During the 1960s, white people were the dominant race in the city. But by the 1970s, African Americans became the city's dominant race and elected Maynard Jackson, Atlanta's first black mayor, in 1973. Mayor Jackson led the modernization of Atlanta's airport, the opening of the Georgia World Congress Center, and the construction of the city's subway system. The city of Atlanta had the honor and privilege of hosting the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, costing $1.7 billion to improve Atlanta's parks, sporting venues, and transportation infrastructure. Despite a few glitches, the games were a huge success and boosted the city to greater heights. Atlanta has become a cultural jewel since its art scene exploded in the 2000s. It opened art galleries on the west side of the city, its High Museum of Art has doubled in size, and the city's Alliance Theatre has won a Tony Award.
