History of Hennepin County Minnesota

History of Hennepin County Minnesota

A History of Hennepin County
The area that would become Hennepin County has been inhabited for at least 8000 years, mainly by the ancestors of today’s Dakota and Ojibwe peoples.

Europeans first came to the area as explorers and fur trappers in the 1600s. The land became part of the US with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and Fort Snelling was built on land purchased from the Dakota. The first settler’s home was built in 1834, but there was no Hennepin County Condo. More of a sod house. Soon after, sawmills near St Anthony Falls were the first industry in the region.

Hennepin County itself was created in 1852, and Minneapolis became its county seat 2 years later. Inexpensive farmland and the growing industrial base brought immigrants from Sweden, Norway, Ireland and Germany, and by 1860 there were more than 12,000 people in the county. By 1900 Minneapolis was a major industrial hub in the Upper Midwest, but 72 percent of the county was still given over to farmland.

How Hennepin County Got Its Name
Hennepin County was originally to be named Snelling County, but the decision was made to name it after Father Louis Hennepin, A Belgian missionary of the Récollets, a Franciscan order. Hennepin had served as an army chaplain, and was one of four missionaries his order sent to New France in 1675. With them, he helped to explore much of the Great Lakes region of what would become the US and Canada. This information probably won’t help you when buying condos in Hennepin County, MN, but it might make you popular at a local quiz night.
